Constantine was emperor of Rome in the 4th century. The Christian religion was rapidly spreading across the emperor to the point that it was sure to become the majority religion.
All emperors up until that time were Pagans, and most were fiercely anti-Christian, having Christians executed in horrific public exhibitions (lions, burnings, gladiators, etc.) This strategy backfired insofar as public persecution often evokes sympathy (see Selma clip below).
Constantine claimed to have seen a vision of a cross, with the message, In Hoc Signo, Vinces. (IHS) In this Sign, conquer.
As a result, he converted to Christianity and commanded his troops forthwith to march in Jesus name.
EVALUATE: Was Constantine's conversion sincere or political?Â
DISCUSS: Thereafter, the Roman emperors sought to hybrid Paganism and Christianity (viz., Christmas, Saints, Easter, Halloween). This decision permeates culture today. Does it compromise Christianity? Is it oxymoronic for a military to "conquer" in the name of the Prince of Peace?
