Coaches

The MECPS Cougars USS Club Swim Team is led by Dr. Sheldon Sucre, a highly accomplished school administrator and physical educator. With a diverse educational background and a wealth of experience, Dr. Sucre brings a unique blend of expertise to the swim team.

Dr. Sucre holds a Doctorate of Education in Educational Leadership from Manhattanville University, as well as an Advanced Certification in Educational Leadership from Molloy University. He also earned a Master's of Education in Curriculum and Teaching in Physical Education from Teachers College at Columbia University and a Master's of Science in Sports Management with a Specialization in Sports-Based Youth Development from Adelphi University.

In addition to his impressive academic credentials, Dr. Sucre is a certified NYS School Building Leader, NYS School District Leader, and NYS K-12 Physical Education teacher. He has extensive experience in the field, having served as a Physical Educator for grades 6th to 12th, teaching a variety of subjects including 6th Grade Science, 8th to 12th Grade Health, and 6th to 12th Grade Physical Education.

Dr. Sucre's dedication to aquatics and water safety is evident in his numerous certifications, including Lifeguard, Waterfront Lifeguard, Lifeguard Instructor, Lifeguard Instructor Trainer, First Aid, and CPR for Professional Rescuer. He is also a Certified Pool Operator and holds certifications in CDC-Head Up! Concussion in Youth Sport and Fundamentals of Coaching 101 and 201.

Throughout his career, Dr. Sucre has been recognized for his outstanding contributions to the field of physical education and aquatics. He has received numerous awards, including the 2024 NYSAHERD Teacher of the Year, the 2023 NYSAHERD Aquatics Section Amazing Person Award, the 2013 Ruth Abernathy Presidential Scholarship, and the 2012 NASPE Outstanding Major of the Year Award, among others.

Dr. Sucre's passion for physical education and aquatics extends beyond the classroom. He is an avid triathlete, having competed in numerous indoor and outdoor sprint triathlons, as well as several marathons. He is also a trained chef from the Culinary Arts of New York (CANY) and has been featured on Fox News.

Under Dr. Sucre's leadership, the MECPS Cougars USS Club Swim Team is poised to thrive, with a focus on developing swimmers' skills, promoting teamwork, and fostering a love for the sport. Dr. Sucre's dedication to creating a positive and inclusive environment, coupled with his extensive knowledge and experience, make him an invaluable asset to the swim team and the Medgar Evers College Preparatory School community.
