Stories from Helene & Curriculum Connections
Background of our assignment: In our English classes, we wrote personal narratives about our Helene experiences with a nod to an Appalachian author of our choice as well as a reference (ENG college reading, writing, and research standards) to one of Wilma Dykeman's tenets. We polished our work by peer editing (ENG writing standard). We created podcasts and a website (TECH standards) and even reached out to community members for interviews and partnerships. For creative writing we studied Appalachian ballads and composed an original group ballad for ENG 232/ ENG 242, American and British Literature.
Speaking of partners, our stories feature a collaboration with Moon Girl Glass--look for our symbols (ENG literature standard) we connected to our Helene narratives. We even got to take fragments of glass from Helene and mold them into symbolic art during a healing ceremony at the Moon Girl Glass Studio in Marshall with the help of talented glass artist, Kristen Munoz (Arts and SEL standards).
