Wingaru "To think"
We celebrated International Mother Language Day on the 21st February. International Mother Language Day is a day to celebrate having a diverse range of languages in our world. It is a way to promote and celebrate the world's linguistic and cultural diversity – and to fully recognise and protect equally the human rights of minorities and indigenous peoples and their language. Students spent time in classes discussing languages they speak at home. Our library showcased our bilingual books, celebrating our student’s diverse language backgrounds.
On the 14th February we celebrated Library Lover's Day. In the library, we ran a guessing competition, colouring-in activities and asked our students to tell us what they love about our school library.
Refugee Week in Australia is always held from Sunday to Saturday of the week which includes 20 June (World Refugee Day). For 2022, it was held from Sunday 19 June to Saturday 25 June.
The Refugee Week theme has a number of important functions including:
Raising awareness of the issues affecting refugees.
Promoting harmony and togetherness.
2022 Theme - Healing
Australia and the rest of the world have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to hit the reset button on how we behave towards one another. The importance of human connections has been underscored by the pandemic and such lessons can help us in so many ways. Mainstream and refugee communities alike can draw upon shared hardship to heal wounds, to learn from each other, and to move forward. Healing can occur through storytelling, through community, and also through realisation of our interconnectedness as individuals.
The library created the above book display for the students, who discussed the importance of Refugee Week in their classes.
NAIDOC Week celebrates the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC Week is celebrated by all Australians and is a great opportunity to learn more about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
NAIDOC Week is an Australian observance lasting from the first Sunday in July until the following Sunday. The acronym NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and
Islanders Day Observance Committee. It has its roots in the 1938 Day of Mourning, becoming a week-long event in 1975.
The 2022 NAIDOC Week theme is "Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up!" and is a call for action to bring about “systemic change and keep rallying around our mob, our Elders, our communities.”
Students learnt about NAIDOC Week in class, and the library created a book display featuring a variety of works by Indigenous Australian authors.
The library shared Diwali resources with students.
During lunchtime, students took part in Diwali craft activities.
