Urban sprawl is the uncontrolled expansion of urban areas, usually characterized by low-density, car-dependent development in the suburbs. It is often associated with converting rural and agricultural land to urban land use, resulting in the loss of open space and wildlife habitat. It can also lead to increased air and water pollution, biodiversity loss, and greenhouse gas emissions. Efforts to address urban sprawl include policies and strategies to promote compact, walkable, and transport-oriented development and to protect and restore natural areas and green spaces.
