Microalgae are microscopic, single-celled or multicellular, photosynthetic organisms primarily found in aquatic environments, including freshwater and marine ecosystems. They play a crucial role in various ecosystems as they form the base of the aquatic food chain, providing essential food and nutrients for a wide range of aquatic organisms. Microalgae are also significant for their potential applications in various industries, including biotechnology, biofuel production, pharmaceuticals, and as a source of nutrition in aquaculture and human diets.
Through engaging presentations, interactive discussions, and real-life examples, the event sought to inform and educate the youth about the pressing matter, fostering a sense of responsibility and inspiring them to become proactive in microalgae research.
The Ocean is a vast body of salt water that covers almost 70% of the earth's surface, also known as the world ocean. It plays a fundamental role in the planet's climate regulation, supporting diverse ecosystems, and providing numerous essential services to life on Earth. Oceans are teeming with a rich variety of marine life, from tiny plankton to massive whales, and they are vital for the global food chain. They also help absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, thus mitigating climate change.
This day is celebrated to raise public awareness about the critical role of the ocean in our lives and the health of the planet. By highlighting the ocean's significance, the event aims to promote conservation efforts, sustainable practices, and responsible stewardship, encouraging individuals and communities to actively contribute to the preservation of this vital ecosystem.
