Careers in Mathematics after completing B.Sc:

  • M.Sc in Mathematics in different state aided universities, viz., JU,NBU,CU,BU,Presidency. Admission on basis of performance on qualifying Admission test and on the percentage of marks obtained in B.Sc. Intake capacity is 60:40 (Home univ: Non home univ).
  • M.Sc in Mathematics in different IITs (IIT Kharagpur, IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, IIT Guwahati, IIT Roorke). Admission on basis of score obtained in JAM (Joint Admission to MSc).
  • MCA on basis of score obtained in WBJEE JECA.
  • Integrated PhD in IISC Bangalore, IISER Kolkata through qualifying test and performance in interview.
  • M.Sc in Mathematics in CMI (Chennai Mathematical Institute), University of Hyderabad, M.Math in ISI Bangalore. Each of these institutes conduct their individual qualifying tests.
  • Students can also opt for post of Assistant Teacher in Schools. For this, one needs to qualify in the written test and interview conducted by West Bengal School Service Commission and need to have B.Ed degree.

Careers in Mathematics after completing M.Sc:

  • The traditional career option is to pursue research and then engage in faculty position in a reputed institute. For this one need to qualify NET (National Eligibility Test), the eligibility criteria for which is 55% in Msc Mathematics. There are several renowned institutes in India for quality research work like IISC Bangalore, ISI Kolkata, ISI Bangalore, CMI, IMSC, HRI, TIFR Mumbai, TIFR Bangalore and different IITs. Students are first shortlisted through written qualifying test and then finally admitted through their performance in the interview.
  • Assistant Professor in state aided colleges after qualifying NET and getting shortlisted in the interview conducted by West Bengal College Service Commission.
  • Assistant Professor in Government Colleges after qualifying the written test and interview conducted by West Bengal Public Service Commission.
  • M.Tech in Computer Science from ISI Kolkata.

Alternative career options other than Academics:

  • Banking-Investing Banking, Retail Banking: Investment banks offers financial advises and services to large corporations, governments and high-net-worth individuals. Retail banking covers the activities of the main street banks, i.e. providing financial services and products to individuals and businesses.

  • Operational Research
  • There are a number of reputed organizations such as AAI, ISRO ONGC, DRDO which also recruits MSc Mathematics students for the post of research scientist and other posts.
