Ballad of McKnight Village
The Ballad of McKnight Village
sung to the tune of "She Came Rolling Down the Mountain"
written by Ethel Altenbaugh for "A Night in the Nineties" held September 8, 1951
Once there was some land along a road they call McKnight
And when they started building there it really was a sight.
Two smoothies put some houses up then walked off with the dough
One of them still lives near here, the other's name is --
Oh, they built up McKnight Village
Oh, they built up McKnight Village
Oh, they built up McKnight Village mighty quick
They threw brickes and boards together, laid out streets in any weather
And you'll have to give them credit they were slick.
Ralph Low and others moved in, then their troubles sure began,
The rain came down in torrents, ripped out gutters as it ran.
The township didn't want us - said our place sure wasn't neat
But when we are through working, not a spot will have it beat.
We were orphans in the Village
We were orphans in the Village
We were orphans in the Village on the hill.
And we had a road called Burma, massie holes in terra-firma
But we hope some day to fix it and we will.
Now the people of the Village are a party loving bunch
They dance and race and play ball, ending with a picnic lunch.
The beer flows by the barrel making everything quite gay,
But when they take our Ball Field, that'll be a sorry day.
Oh, we live in McKnight Village
Oh, we live in McKnight Village
Oh, we live in McKnight Village clean and bright
Where the fun is good and wholesome, and to beat it you will go sore,
A better spot for country living ain't in sight.
There's a story in the Village that it's known as fertile hill
The poor stork is always hovering with a bundle in his bill
When the Christmas party's held - just think of Santa Claus
He really has his troubles and it's only just because:
There are kids in McKnight Village
There are kids in McKnight Village
There are kids in McKnight Village by the score
And the way events are going, the production line's not slowing
From the looks of things there's bound to be lots more.
Now the Mayor of McKnight Village is a guy called Anderson
He's big and tough and works hard, though he still has lots of fun
Once he rode a horse in a parade on picnic day
We almost lost of Mayor when the nag near ran away
Oh, we live in McKnight Village
Oh, we live in McKnight Village
Oh, we live in McKnight Villag way up high
Though some folks are always selling, no one does a lot of yelling
'Cause there's always one more sucker sure to buy.
