VR allows us to view space in a relatively cheap manner. With the advancement of VR equipment, it is becoming more and more affordable to have it in most people’s homes. Companies could use this to their advantage as well as consumer, when they are renovating their business or homes. Instead of spending countless hours on labor and extreme amount of money on objects that don’t fit, we can use VR as a blueprint on how to setup a room.
A real life experience Frank has had with this is Frank’s office at work has just been renovated with new furniture, walls, cubicles, and actual offices. One problem Frank had after renovation was Frank’s supervisors office seemed to be extremely smaller than what the floor plans made it out to be. Frank’s supervisor has been dealing with this issue for about a month now and is currently working with the construction team to fix the issue. The problem with this is already is costing more time and money to have the office expanded. If Frank’s office would have used a VR room were the office was already made in the space, Frank’s supervisor would have been able to see how cramped the room actual would be. Frank’s supervisor would have been able to get a feel for the new office and would have been able to tell the contractors that this room is too small and needs to be expanded. Doing this saves on resources since we will have to rebuild a new wall because of how small the office is.This would still cost money to do since you would have to pay for the “VR floorplans”, however this would still save time and money since we wouldn’t need to contract new contractors to fix the issue.
Another use for this equipment could be for homeowners. Maybe the wife wants to redo the living room or maybe the husband has an idea for a man cave in the basement. They could load up the VR equipment and look through online catalogs and place the items they find in their desired spots. This could save time on returning items that felt out of place, or maybe even eliminate going to the store by having an option to purchase the item from the actual VR room. Companies could even have starter layouts for rooms were you could select a room size, say what you want it to be, and then have it automatically make a room with the specifications given by the user. This room could be generated by using an AI that looks at frequently bought items and then placing them in the appropriate areas. This could help the most indecisive homeowners by giving them a starting point for their new perfect room.
We believe that some point in the future we will be doing most of our shopping by using an AR or VR app. Stores like Ikea and other furniture stores already use an AR type of application, however it doesn’t feel the same as in being in the actual room like the VR project. Companies might at some point in the future start developing VR rooms that consumers can rent out and use them to set up their dream homes. The actual effectiveness of a VR app as of right now is probably poor, but while VR technology advances, we might be able to actual use an application of this caliber in the near future.
