The "missing movement" of Dr. Donald McGinnis' Symphony for Band (1953). It was left out of the published 1977 version.
Dr. McGinnis passed away on October 28, 2016, one week after his 99th birthday. He served as director of bands at Ohio State University from the 1940s through the 1970s, where he led the Ohio State University Concert Band to performances at Carnegie Hall and other prestigious venues.
The Symphony for Band was Dr. McGinnis' doctoral dissertation, supervised by Phillip Greeley Clapp (1888-1954) at the University of Iowa. It dates from an era when composers were exploring "symphonic length" pieces for concert band, and compares favorably to better-known works by Giannini, Persichetti, Gould, and others from the same period.
The movement was lost for nearly 40 years until this recording session in Weigel Auditorium at the Ohio State University. Dr. Russel Mikkelson conducted the Ohio State University Wind Symphony with the composer present at a reading session on March 7, 2007.
Performing edition created by Matthew C. Saunders from the composer's manuscript dissertation housed at the University of Iowa. Performing materials available by contacting Dr. Saunders through his website, www.martiandances.com
