MAHAMAKUT BUDDHIST UNIVERSITY (MBU) was founded on 1 October 1893/2436 by King Rama V or King Chulalongkorn as in remembrance of his late father King Rama IV or King Mongkut. The university aims to become the educational institution for studying the Buddha's teachings and the Pali Language for Buddhist monks and novices. Later on 30 December 1945/2488, an another education institution was set up in an affiliate with the university. This educational institution is known in the name of the education council of Mahamakut Buddhist University which is well known as the first Buddhist University in Thailand.
Later on, the Thai government no 1 October 1997/2540 established Mahamakut Buddhist University to be included in state universities. It means that the university's various degree - Bachelor degree (B.A.), Master of Art (M.A.) and doctorate degree (Ph.D.) is equal to other state universities' degree right. The university aim to produce capable graduates with good knowledge and behaviors. It means that all students have to contain perfect Buddhism knowledge and become scholars capable to lead the Thai society and to solve various problems between Buddhism and other religions. The present rector of Mahamakut Buddhist University is Phrathepvajramedhi, Assist. Prof. Dr. Now Mahamakut Buddhist University has 7 campuses, 3 colleges, and Buddhist Demonstration School. the total of institutes under the supervision of Mahamakut Buddhist University are 16 places.
Makamakut Buddhist University, Isan Campus is the first campus of Mahamakut Buddhist University in the Northeast of Thailand. Makamakut Buddhist Academic Council has approved to establish this campus on 18th December, 1990 at Wat Srijan, Mueang district, Khonkaen province. For the name of the campus at that time, it was called Makamakut Buddhist Academic Council, Isan Campus. There were many monks and novices interested and came to studyin this campus.
Then the Royal Thai government approved Mahamakut Buddhist University a state university under the jurisdiction and supervision of the government. The Isan campus, was given the new name Mahamakut Buddhist University, Isan Campus. The university moved from Wat Srijan to Ban Nonchai, Ratchakanung Road, Nai Muag sub- district, Muang district, Khon Kaen province on 27th June, 1999. The university opened for monks and novices to study on 18th December, 2000. There are many revered monks in the northeast of Thailand supporting education, and they also support university activities, especially Phra Thammadilok (Saman Sumetho). He has continually supported this campus for a long time. Nowadays Phrakhrusutheejariyawat, Assist. Prof. Dr., is the vice-rector of this campus. Mahamakut Buddhist University, Isan Campus provides excellent education for the students, and this campus is one of the best campuses in the northeast of Thailand. There are many students who sit entrance exams to study at this campus. In the present, MBU ISC offers various subjects in Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree. In 2013, this campus offers Ph.D. course in Educational Administration. The Isan campus has two Academic Centers: Ubonrachathani Academic Center and Nongbuaramphu Academic Center.
MBU ISC offers 9 majors in Bachelor’s degree, Teaching English, Teaching Thai, Teaching Buddhist, Teaching Social Studied, Early Childhood Education, Public Administration, Political Science, Social Work and English. The campus also offers 4 majors for Master’s degree: Education Administration, Teaching Thai, Buddhistic Local Government, Buddhist Studies for Development, The campus also offers 3 majors for Doctor's degree: Education Administration, Buddhist and Philosophical Research and Teaching Thai.
