HOWELL MOVEMENT DETAILS ...
Comments rising from the competition held on 18 April 2023 which was a Howell movement ...
As the Results table below shows, there was a select group playing on the night of April 18!! A Howell movement was the only possible option, but even that was stretching it somewhat! For each Round, there were only three tables playing with one of the tables being a Sit Out. As usual with Howell, there was the usual confusion regarding who goes where and 'Aren't we still North-South?' and so on!
In Howell, everyone only gets a Pair Number and being just NS (or EW) for the night doesn't happen! There were just 6 pairs (including a SIT OUT pair). So there were 5 boards for each Round, and there were 5 Rounds (the way it works is, if 'T' is the number of Tables, then the number of rounds is 2 x T – 1).
With only two active tables on each Traveler (the 3rd table had a SIT OUT), the number of points available to each pair was only 0 or 2 – each pair was either 'top' or 'bottom'!). It's probably getting complicated by now for the reader, so spare a thought for the player (and the scorer!). Fortunately, with each result being just a 0 or 2 makes things easy when getting results from the Travelers, so the final picture is as shown below.
A practice hand is shown below for those who may need to do a few warm-up exercises before playing in earnest!
