History of The Sustainable Economies Law Center
Based in Oakland, California, Sustainable Economies Law Center (SELC) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to creating free and accessible legal and economic expertise to move away from the current exploitative economic system, and into a cooperative alternative.
SELC was founded in 2013 by two attorneys that felt trapped in the current bureaucratic legal system, and wanted to create a non-profit law center that prioritized democratic governance. The organization went through many iterations to figure out the best way to decentralize power and build transparency and community within the org. Now SELC is a Worker-Self directed non-profit with 15 full-time employees and no executive director.
Although SELC is based in Oakland, there are many staff members that live all over the world using SELC resources to lead their own passion projects. A democratic process is used to decide which projects and clients SELC takes on. There is also a participatory budgeting procedure to decide how money should flow through the org. Not all staff members are attorneys and everyone is paid equally first, and then equitably based on where the employee lives and their dependents.
