6th – 7th – 8th Grade Student/Parent Information Packet
OLMC: (856) 767-1751
We are looking forward to working with your child this year. We have many exciting subjects and activities that we will be covering throughout the year. We would like to share some of them with you as well as some of the procedures and rules that are set up in our classrooms. We expect that as junior high students your children will respect the rules so that we can maximize learning time together.
Assignments: Assignments are posted in the classroom and the students are given the time during class to copy down their assignments in their planner. Assignments will also be posted on RenWeb. However, your child is responsible for copying down their assignments daily. All assignment are due the next day unless posted by the teacher. Failure to turn in an assignment will result in a zero and a demerit will be issued at the discretion of the teacher. Assignment deadlines are firm; no missing or late assignments will be accepted at the end of the marking period. If your child is absent due to illness they will have sufficient time to complete any missed assignments, quizzes, and tests.
Class Participation/Conduct: All students will start each marking period with a Class Participation Grade of 100 points. If students are not actively participating in class, or are disruptive in any way, points will be deducted from this grade. Students will have an opportunity to correct their behavior (verbal warning, name on board, etc.) in order to maintain their Class Participation grade. Once a checkmark is issued points will be deducted from the Class Participation Grade. Demerits will be issued at the discretion of the teacher.
Proper Heading: All papers should be MLA Format Heading in the following manner:
Name (first and last)
Teacher’s Name
Subject
Date (month, day, year)
Grades for major subjects (Science, Social Studies, Math, Religion, Language Arts, and Reading):
Tests/Projects – 60% Quizzes - 30%
Classwork/Homework - 5% Class Participation - 5%
Grades are as follows: 100-97 A+ 96-93 A 92-89 B+
88-85 B 84-81 C+ 80-77 C
76-74 D+ 73-70 D 69 and lower F
All graded work is posted on RenWeb.
Classroom Expectations:
Remember that the work that you turn in is a reflection of your effort on the assignment. Think about the following expectations when you are preparing an assignment:
· Put your best effort forward at all times.
· Write the proper heading on your paper legibly, using MLA Format and blue or black ink only.
· All work must be neatly and legibly done in MLA Format and blue or black ink only in order to receive credit.
· Any assignments turned in with the “fringes” from spiral notebooks on the paper, assignments that are bunched up, crinkled, illegible, sloppy, or contain stains or holes are unacceptable. You will be required to redo the assignment and your grade will reflect its late status.
· All major assignments, essays and projects must be typed and printed at home. If your printer is not working, neatly and legibly handwrite the assignment. Do not ask to use the office printer or the computer lab to print the assignment the day it is due.
Final draft format for typewritten work is as follows: 12-point font, double-spaced, 1” margins, and Times New Roman font. Google Classroom must be utilized at all times.
Additionally, please note the following:
· All students should pay attention, participate and ask questions.
· Encourage your child to engage in what is going on in the classroom. There are no stupid questions! If they have a question, tell them to ask it!
· Do not cheat, plagiarize, or copy work.
Cheating will not be tolerated. If your child is caught plagiarizing or cheating on any assignment or project, he/she will receive a zero and a demerit will be sent home.
Plagiarism is copying work from another source (such as the internet) without giving proper credit or using all or any part of a report/project that has been written by another person. If a student plagiarizes any assignment, he/she will earn a “0” on that assignment with no opportunity to re-do the work for credit.
Recess Rules:
· Students will have assigned areas during recess.
· A proper social distance between you and your peers must be maintained at all times.
· No sitting or standing by the Religious Education Center entrance.
· Play on the black top only, away from Parish staff’s cars.
· Keep all hands, feet, and objects to yourself.
· Bullying will not be tolerated.
Any infraction of the above rules and guidelines will result in a demerit. Please speak with your child about his/her behavior. Please sign and return the demerit to school the next day. After demerits your child will receive a detention. You will be notified of the time and date of the detention. Demerit forms must be returned the next day.
Communication:
· Please email the school if your child is going to be absent and you would like work to be sent home.
· A note or email is required if your child is absent, being excused early or being picked up.
· Please be advised, that due to insurance and safety issues, your child can only ride the bus to which he/she had been assigned.
· We are available to receive phone calls after school from 2:30 until 2:45 or you can email us as well. We will return your call or email in a timely manner.
· If you feel that we need to have a conference, please feel free to contact us so that we may discuss a date and time.
Special Subjects
The subjects of Latin, Music, Physical Education and Health meet once per week. Computer and Art class meet twice per week. These “special area” subjects are an important contribution to the well-rounded education your child receives at OLMC. These classes are not exempt from the expectations of the major area subjects.
· Grades for these classes count towards year end GPA.
· Lack of progress in these classes can affect ability to participate in extracurricular activities.
· Students are expected to arrive prepared for class.
· When necessary, demerits will be issued.
Art (mstoltz@olmc-school.org)
All assignments are weighted equally. This includes materials that are asked to be brought in for various assignments. In addition to art projects done in class, assignments in art can include bringing in pictures to work from and writing reports on various artists. These assignments are an integral part of learning and of completing art projects. Perfection is not what I am looking for, instead neatness and completion of all projects.
Computers
All computer projects are completed in class. Appropriate online behavior is expected at all times and all assignments are weighted equally.
Latin (lmillenbach@olmc-school.org)
Grades are based on a point system. Students are expected to bring their Latin workbook to all classes. Timely completion of homework and active participation are crucial to learning the language.
Teen Health/Study Skills (amalloy@olmc-school.org)
Students are expected to have a folder and a notebook (notebook/folder will be shared for both subjects). If a student is absent on the day an assignment was explained or due it is the student’s responsibility to contact the teacher for the details. Grades are based on tests, quizzes, homework assignments and class participation, and are weighted equally.
Physical Education
Physical Education is part of general education and it is directed and centered on the total well-being of the student. The skills obtained from the physical education environment will allow the student to develop an attitude which will prepare him/her for a lifelong pursuit of being physically fit. Students are required to wear their mandatory gym uniform (see handbook). Grades are based on participation/effort, achievement of skills, behavior/conduct, attitude, sportsmanship, and skill-based assessments.
Because students only have physical education once a week, it is essential that they are participating to maximize learning. A doctor's excuse must be given if your child has an injury or illness that prevents him/her from participating for more than one week. If your child has been excused from gym due to illness/injury, the school must have a doctor’s release to allow them to return to physical education class.
Music (lmillenbach@olmc-school.org)
All assignments are weighted equally, therefore it is in a student’s best interest to complete all work. If a student is absent on the day an assignment is explained, it is the student’s responsibility to contact the teacher for details. Do not wait until the next week’s class to ask! Participating appropriately in classroom discussions is expected.
We look forward to working together to educate your children this school year.
