Broadly, I am interested in basic and applied aspects of soil invertebrate ecology. My doctoral dissertation focused on the interactions of soil biota with microplastic debris. Microplastics in soil are a recent area of research compared to their longer prominence as a pollutant of concern in the ocean. We don’t yet know if and to what extent microplastics pose a significant threat to soil organisms. More ecotoxicological research needs to be done, and more assessments of microplastic concentrations, sizes, and types found in natural soils will help make those studies more environmentally realistic. My interests, however, lie in not just considering the effects of microplastic on soil organisms, but also the effects of soil organisms on microplastics. How might soil organisms affect microplastics' occurrence and distribution in soil, or mediate their effects on the rest of the soil community?
