Communicating soil ecology is something I’m personally invested in, as it’s an area of biology not well explored by a lot of traditional educational media. Even after a childhood of avidly devouring every science book and nature documentary I could find, many soil animals and even the most basic details of soil ecology were unknown to me until I started reading scientific literature in college. Because of this, I now seek to make soil ecology more accessible to audiences young and old through print, video, and interactive media.
Loam is a set-matching strategy game about building healthy soils. You are a plant, who for obvious reasons is into that sort of thing. You also have a lot more power and agency over your environment than humans often give you credit for. Sculpt the soil’s weird and wonderful biodiversity to assemble vibrant ecological communities and build the healthiest soil of all!
On May 23, 2023, the crowdfunding campaign for Loam launches on Gamefound! The game will always be freely available in a digital form. You can play it online via Screentop.gg.
Pest Quest is a game of strategy, uncertainty, and sticky traps. It is made to teach Integrated Pest Management concepts in a fun, strategic way. Players take on four unique roles; Farm Manager, Scout, Applicator, and Extension Agent, to tackle a farm's pest problem. They experience first-hand the challenges of modern agriculture as they make decisions based on incomplete information, balance environmental and economic priorities, and if all goes well, just barely eke out a profit.
All game materials are freely available to download and print from Google Drive. The game is also playable online via Screentop.gg. This game is a collaboration between myself, Matt Grieshop of Michigan State University, and Tim Lampasona or Rutgers University.
As an M.S. student at Cornell University, I started making educational clay animation videos on a range of soil ecology and entomology topics. Clay animation is an ideal medium for outreach, as it’s cheap, requires no advanced technical skill (just patience and creativity), and is cute, kid-friendly, and immediately approachable. Four of these videos have received awards in video contests hosted by the Entomological Society of America, American Association for the Advancement of Science, and Society of Nematology.
The videos can all be viewed on my YouTube channel.
The Soil Animal Handbook is a guide to a large swath of the animal life found in temperate soils, and includes a wealth of information on how to collect, observe, and even keep soil animals as pets or classroom aids. The handbook can be viewed here.
Life for the Loam is a previous, classroom-focused version of Loam. Though I have plans to sunset it and replace it with the main version of Loam, I'm keeping the link here until this happens.
All game materials are freely available to download and print from Google Drive. The game is also playable online via Screentop.gg.
