I had an Anon ask for a "Humanformer Brainstorm attempting to create new life by creating Ape and Human hybrids?" I had fun with this one and hope to do some more! I don't usually write Brainstorm or humanformers but this was cool.

He was going to be the modern age Frankenstein! He was going to forge a new life from DNA from his evolutionary cousins and himself. Brainstorm was known for his experiments that delved into the realm of being considered mad, but this was one experiment that he was undergoing, he wanted to do well. And there would be no better DNA than his own, of course!
He had everything he could possibly need to create life, a hybrid that could push humanity to the next stage in evolution! (Or extinction, but he thought more for the former.) The samples were fresh, the test tubes were ready, and his lab was prepped. Ready with his notes on the necessity for these genes to knit together to form something brilliant! Homo Simius! The so to be none fabled creature. The creatures birthed between madness and science: a human ape.
Brainstorm wanted to be able to increase, not only the human build, but the size of their brain. It would then be possible through this that both ape and man could grow smarter. And, of course, much stronger. It was going to work! It was going to bud a light so bright in humanity's future! He had to do it.
Science was on his side! It has to be! The math is all there, the DNA is there! He combined the prime specimens, sparks flying and excitement burning through him. Now it would only be a matter of time before his creation would be real, real enough to see progress for!
Now, so long as Percy doesn't come in the lab before his plan was complete, it would go swimmingly. The last thing he needed was to be accused of starting the next armageddon, probably.
This was a gift that I was a little late for Christmas with. ♡ I Hope you enjoy!

"A Small Surprise"
Drift’s optics were too wide, bulging and field wild. “Are you sure? Are you really sure?” His armor trembled even for how tight it had clamped to form. His servos coming to rest on his problem spot.
“Yes, quite sure.” First Aid did not look up for a moment until he saw the fear in the uncharacteristically dark. "What's the matter?"
I don't know if I'm ready to tell Rodimus this, is what Drift should have said but his glossa caught in his throat. This wasn't supposed to happen, not this early! They had time to plan and think this through before but… time's run out.
After his moments of panic, he forced a crooked smile. "Nothing. I think… I need to clear my head."
"Meditate?" First Aid did not look up from his tablet.
The nervous laughter couldn't be helped, it came on too suddenly for Drift to control. "Yeah, meditate."
"Be sure to let your partner know what's going on. Don't hesitate to call."
Every part of him was trembling. He may have been close to Rodimus and his HAB but he couldn't bring himself to go straight there. His head was going every which way it could have: reminded of his past, reminded of his recent mistakes, but somehow this topped the list. His head was going too many directions to meditate, even if it had been a lie to First Aid, he still couldn't do it.
But at least he knew that Rodimus wouldn't been in the HAB for a short while, but as soon as shift was over, something else could be over too. It was the last thing Drift wanted to consider. They were finally in a good place—this was a wrench and he was not prepared for. They didn’t have time before to discuss the ‘what-ifs’. Their lives already had many what-ifs, this wasn’t planned… And it was about to drive Drift up the wall; he didn’t want to go through this alone but somehow his certainty was not strong. Not right now.
The door was open and closed faster than usual. Anxiety obviously coloring his speed, as his hands and body shook almost violently. He didn’t have a lot of time to not tell Rodimus, he had even less time before his shift was over.
He paced the floor, servos wringing, spark beating painfully in his chest. It wouldn’t be long now… And he could only keep his condition secret until it would be too late. It was medically too late to do anything, and it only told Drift that this was going to be terrible or Brainstorm level of cosmic destruction. That thought was enough to cease his pacing and shudder—perish the thought! It couldn’t be that bad, right.
In the midst of his emotional state, his thoughts were so loud that he did not hear anyone approach. Rodimus had only seen him this jumpy once.
It was when they first met. “Drift?” His pace ceased, and the adrenaline was pumping to all the wrong places. Rodimus’ field strongly, if nervously, flared. Why and who made Drift this upset? The sudden flash of anger may not have been directed toward Drift but his head ran with what was felt.
“What happened?” Rodimus pursued Drift, through the HAB until he had a door closed in his face, only after a few moments did he feel his field bleeding with anger—realizing that it may have set Drift off even worse. “Drift, please open the door,” his voice grew quiet. “I promise I’m not mad at you. I just want to know who hurt you.” He waited a moment before he would break down the door, but a tiny voice piped up a mumble. “Drift?”
He opened the door timidly, optics dark, servos wringing, field buzzing and slipped through Rodimus’ own. Fear, it was one of the strongest sensations that he felt covering Drift’s chassis, it hurt the red mech like being shot. “It wasn’t just anyone.” Rodimus deflated, spoilers lowering. “Just something really stressful.”
“If it made you run to our room, must have been.” Rodimus’ field floated around his chassis, spreading calm energy, it saying it’s okay. He invited Drift in, arms open wide and accepting. Drift, although hesitant, accepted the embrace. “Can we talk about it?” Rodimus smoothed his servos along the tense spine, stroking over the details of Drift’s kibble.
Drift took a moment for himself, try and catch his breath, to steady himself. Although Rodimus was here and that meant that he would have to tell him soon… his presence did sully his fragile nerves. With a grumble against Rodimus’ throat cables that was barely audible, “not right now.” He shuddered when Rodimus tightened his hold, servo holding the small of Drift’s back and his neck, it was one way for Rodimus to feel like he was helping.
Rodimus started to rock them both gently back and forth. “It wasn’t all me, was it?” Drift’s mouth was dry, vocalizer not cooperating, settling for the quiet hmm that came from his mouth. Rodimus slowly released his hold, taking a moment—a moment that melted into a minute, to peer into Drift’s darkened blues. His servos coming up to caress the white, blushed cheeks. “I just want you to be okay.”
He was not ready for this but for now, he could be close to Rodimus. His field had been nothing but soothing since earlier. Drift could wait until tomorrow, right? It's not like his condition was going to change that quick. He shifted, laying his helm on Rodimus' thighs. He was comfortable and Roddy was always so warm—Drift wanted to keep this. And with Rodimus stroking his finials, he would have fallen into recharge—
—if it was for the fact that Rodimus' field changed again. "Drift," firmly but not in confrontational way, "you went to medbay today?" Drift's optics shot wide, internally screaming profanities. "Was that what made you upset?"
The reckoning came much faster than anticipated.
He couldn't boot up his voice box, too much static to decipherable anyway. He pulled in his frazzled field close to his frame, not ready to share his diagnoses… he should have known Rodimus would have gotten a report from medical bay.
"Unscheduled, scans—Drift, what happened? You never go to medbay willingly unless it's for Ratchet," sounding distressed, servos still petting Drift's frame.
He couldn't take it, this is where it'll end. Drift left the comfort of Rodimus' lap, knowing that what he was going to say could end it all. Even as Rodimus reached out to try and offer comfort, and even if Drift wanted so badly be in his embrace, he denied himself the comforts that would have made this easier. "Yes, I did. And it's something serious."
"You're scaring me, Drift." His bright blue optics changed hue, budding worry sparking in their glow.
"It's something we didn't plan for, didn't really think of happening until it actually did."
"Drift, please just tell me. We can work through this," he couldn't take it anymore, grabbing Drift's servos holding them tightly in his own. "You and me, I promise." His optics were pleading, his field was urging, urging Drift to trust him.
Drift was trying to not hyperventilate, to stay calm but that was nearly impossible. The view of Rodimus grew foggy, the unfortunately easy pouring coolant pooled in his optics. "I'm carrying."
"Really?" Rodimus stroked his knuckles, joy spilling from his field. If Drift's optics were not clouded by coolant, he would have seen the stars in Rodimus'. But the way that Rodimus hopped over and careased with both servos and peppered kisses Drift's face changed the mood.
"You're taking this better than I did."
"Why didn't you tell me sooner?"
"I was scared." He closed his optics, relaxing into Rodimus' warm palms. "We didn't talk about it and this wasn't planned and—" Rodimus lovingly cut off Drift. A short kiss that made Drift's lips tingle.
"We can do this together, okay? This wasn't a mistake, it's much better than that! I've wanted this with you," Rodimus beamed. Drift could almost see little hearts manifest around his lover's helm. The dink age was coming to an end and they were both happy about it.
I really love making mood boards. Here are some for a friend on Tumblr! These were totally fun to make and look forward to do more!
Commission: Mood boards (12 Jan 2020)
One of my friends asked that I make moodboards for our friends in our group chat. I thought it would be fun and would be a good way to test how well I know my friends' interests. And with help from Anna, it helped me continue the process! With permission from my friends, I wanted to share!
The Rodimus cartoon in the top left belongs to Bimbocore on Tumblr. I did ask for permission to use their image.
