Goodbye Sunshine, 2023, 44 x 28 in, Ink on paper
This piece was made during a summer program in 2023 and was my first introduction to sequential narratives and illustrations in the standard comic format. With this piece, I wanted to make an engaging, noir-esque comic that follows a detective uncovering corruption in his precinct. Since the creation of this piece, almost all of my work has had narrative at the forefront–even without planning–and the presence of illustration, character design, and lettering.
"I am Smaller than the Smallest Fireball", 42 x 30 in, 2024 Oil pastel, chalk pastel, ink on paper
This piece was made trying to combine several different influences and aspects of art to create a piece depicting helplessness through the idea of being “small.” The idea that the world is stacked against you with you having no say over your surroundings or your life. Along with the mixing of artistic mediums, I also set out to experiment with various mediums of inspiration. I took inspiration from sci-fi comics for the left side as well as musical inspiration throughout the piece. The title and the lettering are quotes from the song “Stairs to the Attic” by The Antlers which I found to be very fitting for the imagery and ideas of “smallness” in the piece. Works following this one have also taken substantial inspiration from songs, especially lyrics.
