Our History
The Matt Talbot Group W-91 was founded on April 8, 2008. Our first women’s retreat was held June 6–8, 2008 at the Xavier Center in Convent Station, NJ, and we have continued to hold bi-annual retreats ever since. On March 1, 2025, the Matt Talbot Group W-91 was officially designated as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
Our Mission
The mission of the Matt Talbot Group W-91 is to assist alcoholic women in recovery in their spiritual rehabilitation by improving their conscious contact with their Higher Power through a semi-annual weekend retreat; to promote the name and good works of our patron Matt Talbot; and to provide assistance to women financially in need to defray the cost associated with attending a W-91 retreat.
What is a Matt Talbot Retreat?
A Matt Talbot retreat is a spiritual weekend designed for individuals in recovery from alcoholism who seek to strengthen their sobriety through prayer, fellowship, and reflection. Rooted in the life and example of Venerable Matt Talbot—an Irish laborer whose profound commitment to sobriety, humility, and faith transformed his life after years of alcoholism—the retreat offers a supportive environment that blends quiet contemplation with group discussions, spiritual talks, and shared meals. Participants come together in a safe, welcoming space to deepen their connection with a Higher Power, renew their commitment to recovery, and build meaningful bonds within a like-minded community.
The W-91 Retreat Expereicne:
What makes a W-91 retreat unique is the spirit of warmth, joy, and connection that we intentionally cultivate throughout the weekend. Alongside the traditional retreat experience, we incorporate creative and engaging elements such as art reflections, gentle movement like yoga, and shared moments of laughter and fun.
One of the most meaningful parts of the weekend is our art experience, which has become a favorite among participants. Thoughtfully connected to the spiritual theme, it offers a hands-on, personal way to reflect, express, and connect with others. Many women share that this experience not only deepens their understanding of the weekend, but also creates a lasting sense of connection—and leaves them with something tangible and meaningful to take home.
