I am the Professor of International Political Economy at the Helmut Schmidt University in the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg.
The Helmut Schmidt University is one of two universities of the Federal Armed Forces of Germany (Bundeswehr) responsible for the civilian education of future and current officers of the armed forces.
My research focuses on international power shifts and the changes they induce in global order and institutions.
I was born in the city of Dunedin in the South Island of New Zealand. After completing bachelor's and master's degrees at the University of Otago, I undertook doctoral studies at the Berlin Graduate School for Transnational Studies and was awarded my doctorate by the Free University Berlin in 2013.
From 2013 to 2024 I was based at the research unit Global Governance of the WZB Berlin Social Science Center. I have also had fellowships or research stays at the University of Sydney, Hitotsubashi University, the Ludwig Maximilian University Munich, and the German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA) Hamburg.
