"The singing lessons with Matthew have not only made me a better singer but he helped me greatly to be more organazised and become a proffesional singer too. From the first lesson I had with Matthew he was able to see instantly what I need to work with to become a better singer and artist. He really invested in me as a student with his time patience and knowledge and gave me generous feedback and concrete informtation and things (excercises) to work on till next lesson. We have worked alot with my support system, breathing and my registers, to get a smooth transitian from cheastvoice -middle voice to headvoice. He taught me in a way that makes it easy to understand and adapt into my own music, which was popular music with a mix of blues and jazz. Im a practical person and he teaches me in a practical way, I like that."

With Matthew you get a voice teacher and a coach in one. Not only is he an expert in singing technique, but he is able to accompany you in most of the repertoire. He is passionate about what he does and keen to help you develop by suggesting exercises customized to your personal vocal issues. He is also a kind person and a good confident, always ready to offer excellent advice. I have been studying with him since 2016 and I always come out of a lesson feeling more confident about my voice.

Marcus Dawson

  • Royal Academy of Music London

"I started as a student with Matthew right after high school, as a young baritone.

He quickly heard what I needed to work on, and always had a solution to help me further. What made the singing lessons so good for me was that every time he had suggestions for a new repertoire, was a pianist on the piano and could accompany (comes very well in a singing lesson!), and taught me singing exercises I use daily that day in day. Even in his spare time, Matthew's follow-up was close, and he sent me tips and tricks, good recordings of songs and arias I worked with, and articles about the anatomy of the larynx so I could better understand what was going on when I sang. I could also send him a message at any time if I had simple questions about music, and he was always quick to answer.

Do you sit and feel that it tickles a little in the vocal cords and want to work more with your song development? If you have just started singing, are studying music in high school, just want to sing a little better in the shower or if you are studying singing at a higher level, take a few hours with Matthew. You are in good hands!"

"Matthew Marriott has helped me tremendously with developing my adult voice after singing for many years as an accomplished boy treble. He is wonderfully dedicated to his students, hugely knowledgeable about singing technique and is a great source of inspiration and new repertoire. I was thrilled when I first started taking lessons with Matthew, because he immediately identified my deficiencies and guided me in how I could improve. He is very clear and expressive, and it is easy to understand what he wants you to do. He keeps the level of difficulty at the right level for you to continue developing, while maintaining your motivation. And his skill at the piano is a big asset in every teaching session. I look forward to every lesson with Matthew, and I am very thankful for all the progress he has brought about for me as a singer."

Not only have I developed a lot as a singer with him by my side but also gained more confidence and a friend. Matthew does not hold back on any information and he will teach you everything he knows with passion. He makes the lessons filled with vocal and anatomic knowledge, repertoire suggestions, plans for the future as well as fun and so much more. Matthew gives me as a student a lot of confidence by always believing and knowing how well I can do.

With a warm heart I recommend Matthew as a vocal teacher no matter what level you are on. Building your voice from scratch or if you are already a professional opera singer with years of experience behind you.

"Matthew's inspirational approach has helped my confidence and ability as a singer soar! I came to him with a problem I've had for years with mixing between registers. After just a few lessons I felt for the first time that my voice was a single instrument instead of three separate units. And in this short process I gained so much more; breath control, pure vowels and flexibility (which I've never really had). I feel as if there are no hindrances that I can't overcome, thanks to Matthews clear and accountable pedagogy!"

"After finishing my degree in opera, I was almost ready to quit singing altogether... My self confidence was gone, and my voice felt awkward, after having been told to fabricate a sound for three years. Matthew has been instrumental in finding back my own voice with its natural functions. Furthermore he is an encouraging teacher who is always there, strengthening both your technique and your self esteem. I highly recommend Matthew Marks Marriott. PS: He even plays the piano!"

He not only have huge extensive vocal knowledge but he is also very good to explain what he teaches in a way that both young, new singers and singers with a lot of experience evolve and get better every time they have a lesson. He is also very good at starting good projects like masterclasses, a really great way for singers to meet and learn from both him and each other. His cooperation with opera professor Elizabeth Norberg-Schulz is an example of this. When it comes to Opera to the people and Oslo Opera Festival, he is an important collaborator both as a person that gives masterclasses, but also as a person that recommend good singers for a lot of our events."

I have worked with Matthew for a couple of years now, and it’s been the best years for my vocal development! As a young tenor it has been amazing to have a teacher that understands my voice, and what it needs. Matthew is as well the most dedicated teacher I have ever had. "I would recommend anyone with ambitions to learn to sing with a healthy and solid technique to take lessons with the wonderful Matthew Marriott. He is a brilliant singing teacher with enormous competence, and he has a completely unique ability to cultivate the talent in young singing voices. As well as any voice of any level it seems!

I myself came to Matthew having been singing pop and rock music. have I had regular teaching with Matthew in the autumn of 2018, and look back on a great development as a singer and musician under his leadership. Because of him I developed a huge passion for opera and found my tenor voice. Under his guidance I then got into several universities to study classical singing and opera. I still when, possible, always try to visit Matthew for lessons. They are invaluable to me as a singer."

I myself have had regular teaching with Matthew and look back on a great development with him

He is highly committed to every student he has and always seems to find the time to give every individual that studies with him all the time they need . "I've had a very good and productive year with Matthew Marriott as my teacher at Toneheim Folkehøgskole. Matthew is a very thorough and passionate teacher and most of all ALWAYS present when a student needs his advice. His simple and brilliant way of explaining technique, "breathing and posture as IMPORTANT!" has taught me about more of the aspects of singing. And of course, he is most caring and is always proud of the students progress! I gained entry to Norges Musikk Høgskole under the guidance and preparation of Matthew"

Henning Økland

  • Tenor and Doctor

  • Legespesialist indremedisin og geriatri. RELIS Oslo Universitetssykehus, Rikshospitalet. Foretakstillitsvalgt Ous

"After finishing my work as a professional ballet dancer I educated as physician and I am now working at Oslo university hospital.

I never felt very happy about my voice, but Matthew has been a very important factor both in giving me confidence and technique to trust my own voice. He is an attentive human and induces a secure feeling in his students, which is the best precondition og all effective learning. I have joined several masterclass with Matthew and the classes have always reflected trust and enthusiasm among the students.

Apart from his obvious pedagogical qualifications, he has impressed me as a physician with his interest and knowledge about the anatomical functions relating to the singing and voice-work. In a precise way technical problems concerning vocalization, sound quality and pitch is explained and solved true logical explanation, relating to the functioning of the body. He is also an excellent pianist and makes every musical challenge far more easier to overcome.

Finally, Matthews positive spirit and energy always make me feel energized after the lesson even after a long day of work. I give my best recommendation for the teaching of Matthew and I am very grateful for all his generous sharing of knowledge!"

Jonathan Steen Bjørnseth

  • Tenor

"I came from a background with little classical training. I sang in a choir when I was little, and aquired a passion for singing, but having focused on other instruments and genres for some time, after Videregående (High School), I wanted to take some classical singing lessons to see how it would go. That's why I started taking lessons with Matthew Mark Marriott, at Toneheim Folkehøgskole. When I first started, I couldn't tell up from down or vibrato from staccato, but Matthew patiently chipped away, and shaped my voice from a baritone mess, into a tenor that got into schools in London, Glasgow and, come autumn, I'm starting my bachelor in classical singing at the Norwegian Academy of Music. Part of the reason I said no to the schools in the U.K., is that I want to continue taking lessons with Matthew, here in Norway. Matthews way of working is methodical, and practical. He has great knowledge of the anatomy that makes the voice work, and communicates clearly, without ambiguous metaphors and other points of confusion, something which I have found to be common among other singing teachers. He also teaches in the Bel Canto tradition, which I have found to be the one true path to relaxed and healthy singing.

He is truly dedicated and passionate about teaching, and devotes himself completely to the subject. His teaching has taken my singing to previously unimaginable places, and I'm very grateful for the opportunity to work with him."

Alexander Løe Myrling

  • Bass baritone, Norges Musikkhøgskole.

"I had the great pleasure to meet and have Matthew as my singing teacher on Toneheim Folkehøgskole. Since then we have remained our close ties both in work and singing. Matthew is aunique teacher and few equals his commitment to his students. Whether it be spending full evenings of settling pieces, responding to messages with tips and advice 2 AM or his great ability to bring confidence and comfort in singing to his students. He still always seem to enjoy his work. His singing lessons are somewhat spectacular as he does all from describing and demonstrating the optimal way of singing in addition to also play the piano professionally to help students through their repertoire. His elegant and beautiful voice, huge knowledge in bel canto singing and his endless thirst for bringing students to their full potential makes Matthew one of the finest voice teachers there is in Norway today. He has helped my voice to remarkable progress in short time. If you are an ambitious hard working singing student then Matthew will give you the rest."

Edvard Taugbøl Hasseldal

  • Counter tenor, Norwegian music academy

"When I started having lessons with Matthew Marriott I felt that my voice had not been itself for more than a year. I had developed a breathy tone that my earlier teachers had not been able to help me with, and my voice tired quickly. When I started having lessons with Matthew at Toneheim folkehøgskole he knew what to do straight away, and within weeks my breathiness was gone, and my voice had developed a strong, clear focus, a richness in overtones and had grown tremendously in size. I felt like I had rediscovered my voice and the joy of singing! Matthew also helped me understand my instrument better - with every exercise came a thorough explanation of why and how it was to be performed, in addition to how it all related to the biology of the voice. In the year I have spent with Matthew as a teacher I experienced progress that I can honestly say I would never have thought possible for me or for anyone."

Marte Stensheim

  • Graduated Nordic Institute of stage and scene ,Oslo.

"The singing lessons with Matthew have not only made me a better singer but he helped me greatly to be more organised and become a professional singer too. From the first lesson I had with Matthew he was able to see instantly what I need to work with to become a better singer and artist. He really invested in me as a student with his time patience and knowledge and gave me generous feedback and concrete information and things (exercises) to work on till next lesson. We have worked a lot with my support system, breathing and my registers, to get a smooth transition from chest-voice -middle voice to head-voice. He taught me in a way that makes it easy to understand and adapt into my own music, which was popular music with a mix of blues and jazz. Im a practical person and he teaches me in a practical way, I like that."

Sara Aasen Soprano

  • Masters student, Norwegian National Opera studio

"Matthew is the most passionate teacher and coach I have ever had the pleasure of working with. My lessons with Matthew have been a major turning point for me when it comes to developing a sound technical foundation. Matthews individual approach to each of his students ensures not only an increase in technical awareness and mastery but also helps with other matters connected to becoming a successful singer like stage fright/appearance, audition training and interpretation. I am confident in saying that any student willing and committed to giving Matthew his full attention and trust, will experience a pivot in development. The help he has given me is immeasurable and I would most sincerely recommend him to anyone at any level or genre, searching for a singing teacher."

Håkon Rodvelt Anvik

  • tenor Bachelor student Nowegian Music Academy

"When I came to Matthew I had been told I was a baritone. He then told me otherwise, and confirmed what I had thought for a while. After just the first lesson with Matthew at Toneheim I sensed this was an extremely talented and devoted teacher, with a huge repertoire of vocal exercizes and a deeply profound knowlegde about them and how to explain in it hust the right way. I think he understands how his students think, so he can easily explain concepts which i had failed to understand previously I saw an improvement for me as a singer in just a few lessons, and his approach never tired my voice but made it bigger and more connected. Choose Matthew as a teacher if you want to explore the true potential in your voice, and want a teacher that cares about you so much that he sends you suggestions on what to sing in his spare time such as weekends and holidays! He inspires you to work hard and has a seeming endless depth of knowledge. I would recommend Matthew Mark Marriott to anyone and everyone!"

Steffen Siggervåg Sortland

  • Tenor Stavanger University

"When i first started studying with Matthew I had almost no idea of what technique was, that was after singing classical for a year. Matthew has shown me, how i am supposed to sing. After 10 months with Matthew i have learned how to better control my voice, with a much bigger and better sound. He has also learned me how to better control my nerves. Matthew is a man who loves what he is working with, and you can see it. After many working hours he is still willing to give advices and share his knowlegde to eager minds. He is a very dedicated and passionate man, with great teaching and piano abilities. Both coming in good hand to get effective lessons."
