The fall semester of 2021 in my ENGL-120C (Topics in Composition) course we were exploring the question What is the definition of literacy? Throughout the semester we had the opportunity to explore this question through our readings, discussion, and projects within the class. One of the projects that we were assigned was conducting a micro ethnography on a community we were a member of. Some of the options that we had to choose from family groups, friend groups, workplace, and study groups. There was a variety of communities that we had the opportunity to choose from but the community that I choose was the West Sacramento Writing center, my place of work.
After making my observations on the West Sacramento Writing center, I went through the process of looking through the data that I collected over the few weeks. While processing the data that I collected I was formulating a research questions for me to use while analyzing the data and that research question was How do the tutors at the West Sacramento Writing Center use their literacy to interact with the student and professor communities of Los Rios Community College District? The reason why I wanted to ask this question was because the West Sacramento Writing Center is part of a diverse population of students with a wide range of cultural, ethnic, and economic backgrounds. The diversity of students and their backgrounds can influence their own literacies and how they apply those literacies in their classes that they are taking at the Sacramento City College West Sacramento Outreach Center. With these factors in mind, I want to explore how my coworkers utilize their own literacies and apply said literacies to their interactions with the students and within our own organization.
