POWER PE Special Olympics Basketball Game
Rationale:
These are photos from a special Olympics assembly that we had. There were a few skills events where students and teachers faced off, and it was highlighted by a POWER PE basketball game - special education students and their mentors participated in the game.
This event was a great example of this standard being put into practice. It was set up to include every student in the school in the same event, and it was a success. I really liked that during our POWER PE classes that week, we helped the students prepare for the game with some practice.
The event was very positive and a very good time for all students. The general education students in attendance were all very supportive of the special education students who were participating. Schools should do this more because unlike some other things that are happening in schools today, it's actually a very good and positive experience.
Standard 8L: Initiates collaboration with others to create opportunities that enhance student learning

Flex Room Class Joining Gymnasium Class
Rationale:
This is a schedule coordinating where all the PE classes go every day. There are 4 or 5 classes and only 3 rooms - a gym, fitness room, and a small side room - so there is a spot for everyone, but the system needs to be running smoothly in order for students to get a quality class period.
Being forced into the same room as 1 or 2 other teachers absolutely initiates some collaboration. In this case, it was essential in student learning, because there would be no learning if the gym is in chaos. The quality collaboration that occurs eliminates the chaos and allows learning to happen.
Working well with another teacher that is in the same room as you is essential in giving students quality opportunities in class. When there are 2 or even 3 classes in a small gymnasium, you have to work together so that the room is split appropriately and that your students get quality time to participate in the activity.
