Hello! My name is Ms. Mattern and I will be your humanities teacher this school year!
Some facts about me:
I have 3 degrees:
a Bachelor of Arts in History (Juniata College)
a Master of Science in Historic Preservation (Clemson University and the College of Charleston)
and a Master of Arts in Teaching of Social Studies (Teachers College, Columbia University)
I grew up in Northern Virginia, but I moved to New York City a little over a year ago to become a teacher
Prior to becoming a teacher, I worked as a conservator at a historic cemetery in Washington D.C.
I live with two little pups--a Pomeranian- Papillion mix (named Chestnut) and a Yorkie (named Molly)
In my free time, I like to bake, read, swim, and explore NYC's art and history museums
My favorite book is Snow Falling on Cedars by David Guterson and The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead. My favorite authors are Isabel Allende and Colson Whitehead, and my favorite genre is historical fiction (but I also love graphic novels!)

I am in my fifth year of teaching.
I am a product of the New York City school system. I attend school here from kindergarten to college, graduated and now I'm back to teaching!
Before I was a teacher, I worked in the juvenile detention system as a Corrections Officer.
When I am not with my amazing students, I am a photographer on the side. I love to take pictures.
I LOVE fashion and I refuse to let any student be flyer than me. (LoL)
My favorite book is Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill.
