Integrity and character are paramount in making transformational change. A school leader need's to make difficult decisions, "and many times these are not easy matters; the issues and "correct" answers are not easily defined and are not readily made according to the written policy of the school system."
(Daresh and Alexander, 2016, p.37)
Matt prides himself on being honest and forthcoming to all stakeholders, even when that conversation is not easy. Matt works to build a school culture that meets the needs of students, parents, staff, and the community at large while upholding his personal values and the mission and vision of the school. Education is a pillar of society and it is Matt's sacred duty to ensure that schools lead positive community transformation.
No member of the school community will feel the need to hide aspects of who they are in order to fit in with the culture of the school. The physical and mental wellbeing of students is always a priority and academic learning is built off the foundation that this wellbeing provides. Matt's schools work with families and the community to provide the utmost in support and care for the whole student.
Teachers are the real backbone of the school community and Matt's leadership respects this on a daily basis. Teachers are given all the tools and supports necessary to reach all students, and they are respected in all aspects of the evaluation process. Targeted supports for teachers who need or desire them come not with a corrective lens, but with a cooperative one.
All members of the school staff should be able to identify and articulate the school’s mission and vision and explain how their role can support that.
The school’s mission and vision should not be empty words posted on the website, but a lived reality and constantly refined goal.
All student success and equity goals communicated to students should be tied into the mission and vision statements so that students can see the “why” to go along with the “what”.
All stakeholders will understand that as their school leader, the physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing of students will always be my priority. Unless we care about the people who are our students, we won’t have much success academically or in bridging educational disparities.
Students, families, and community stakeholders will know about the school’s commitment to educational equity, how we as a building define that, and how we will provide regular updates on the status of our efforts to provide educational justice for all of our students. As a school leader, I will not apologize for making equity a priority.
The school’s mission, vision and the concrete goals to make that a living reality will go through the Plan-Do-Study-Act process with input sought at all levels of the school. Other improvement science methods will be explored and implemented as needed.
Personally, I will make sure that my values as a school leader are always at the forefront of what I do. I will be equity-focused, authentic in everything I do, and more than willing to adapt as new information or circumstances arise. Those messages will be repeatedly sent and reinforced so that there is no doubt as to my priorities as a leader for educational excellence for every student, regardless of race, class, gender, or other identities.
