Research Content

We are interested in environmentally friendly water management in agricultural fields concerning water and carbon/nitrogen cycles (irrigation drainage engineering, soil hydrology) and evaluating light environments essential for crop cultivation (agricultural meteorology, agricultural environmental engineering). The current main themes are as follows:

Research Themes

Paddy water management for mitigating methane emissions

Methane, a type of greenhouse gas, is emitted from paddy fields. When paddy fields remain flooded for an extended period, the soil becomes reduced, initiating the activity of methane-producing bacteria. For methane emissions mitigation, it is an effective way to drain the water, allowing the soil to oxidize. Water management is crucial for rice growth and environmental conservation. Considering the water movement in the soil and the associated substance transport, we aim to explore region-specific environmentally considerate water management practices that optimize rice cultivation and environmental preservation.

High-temperature measures and light environment evaluation in greenhouse horticulture during summer

Shading materials are generally used to prevent high summer temperatures in horticultural facilities. Furthermore, amidst the emphasis on the light environment within the greenhouse for crop yield and quality, the concepts of Direct light and Diffuse light have garnered attention in recent years. We aim to elucidate how shading materials affect the light environment inside the greenhouse (whether sunlight arrives as direct or diffuse light, etc.) and the impact of the light environment on plant growth.
