There are two levels of local government in Pembrokeshire - the local authority Pembs County Council (PCC) and the 78 Community Councils which represent the first tier of local government - the one closest to the community and with the most local knowledge. The Mathry Community Council area encompasses Mathry, Castlemorris and Abercastle. Its activities are governed by legislation and it raises income through its Precept (derived from the local Council Tax) and spends this money on its activities, services and projects. It owns Mathry Community Hall (the running of the Hall is delegated to the Mathry Community Hall Committee) and Castlemorris Village Green.
The Council is comprised of 6 Community Councillors and a Community Clerk, all of whom are committed to supporting the local community. Meetings are usually held on the third Monday of each month, apart from August.
The Council is a statutory consultee for all local planning applications and is consulted about road improvements and public transport. The Council now runs the public toilets in Mathry and is looking to take on the running of the Abercastle public toilet soon.
The Council derives its main income from the Precept which it applies for each year. The Precept for 20-25/26 has been set at £13,500 .
