350 maternity packs were handed over for distribution.
Sri Lanka is currently facing the worst economic crisis in its history, which has gravely affected all the communities in the country. Many pregnant mothers are struggling to afford the bare necessities required for them and their newborns. According to the Family Health Bureau (FHB) of Sri Lanka, there are about 10,000 mothers who are already facing financial hardships. With the current inflation rates in the country, prices of essential items have skyrocketed, and some items have even tripled in price, which has put nearly all of them into a dire situation.
We are a concerned group of Sri Lankans who understand the burdens of these disadvantaged mothers and their babies. Along with your help, we would like to help them by providing a kit of essential items.
Our goal is to raise a minimum of AUD 10,000 which will allow us to donate at least 250 kits of essential items to these struggling new mothers. We are working closely with the Family Health Bureau, which will manage and monitor the distribution process and provide us with the updates which will be shared with the public.
We would really appreciate it if you could join us with this noble cause. Your contribution could be the reason behind the smile of a helpless mum and a baby in Sri Lanka.
Monetary donations will be collected via the 'GoFundMe' crowdfunding platform. Once we reach the end of the collecting period (31st May 2022), the funds will be utilised to purchase the goods from Sri Lanka. A list of goods that each ‘maternity kit’ would contain is provided in the 'Donation Kit' tab.
As of 21/04/2022, each pack was roughly estimated to be around LKR 10,000 (AUD 40). From the minimum planned collection amount (AUD 10,000), we will be able to purchase at least 250 packs.
Goods will be purchased, packed, and transported to FHB by our close friends and family in Sri Lanka, who gladly volunteered for this charity event. We prioritize bulk purchases (depending on the availability of the goods) and try our best to get at least three quotations for most items to purchase quality goods for a minimum cost.
FHB will handle the distribution of these packs to mothers through MOHs. Dr. Neththanjali Mapitagama, Consultant Community Physician, National Programme Manager, Womens' Health, will coordinate the distributions and provide updates on the distribution progress.
We believe in transparency and accountability. All updates will be published on this website. In addition, every contributor is welcome to contact any of our team members for additional details.
