Math Retreat for this year will take place on April 27, 2026.
Throughout the first part of the day, students, faculty members, and visitors are invited to attend and engage in oral presentations that highlight the excellence, hard work, diversity, and creativity of our students and faculty.
After lunch, attendees are invited to the Andrew Balas lecture, which is an exciting and inviting 50-minute talk, aimed at a general audience that is enthusiastic about learning Mathematics and its applications.
Note on background graph (courtesy of Dr. James S. Walker): This is 1/4 of a larger artwork, James S. Walker (2018), Crystal Universe. This artwork is a rectangular portion of an infinite design that enjoys 6-fold rotational symmetry, translational lattice symmetry, and reflective symmetry along the horizontal and vertical axes. The art was produced as part of a research project that Dr. Walker engaged in with Emily Gullerud (2018 UWEC alumnus, 2024 Mathematics Ph.D. - Univ. of Minnesota).
A complete version of the artwork, and its mathematical and artistic significance, can be found in the Mathematics Department display case near HHH 308. It was published in The Handbook of Complex Analysis (Ed. Steven G. Krantz) in 2022.
