Our goal is to support incoming graduate students in ways the department or administration may not always be able to! We strive to create a welcoming culture of support :)
A big part of this is sharing helpful resources—whether it’s tier exam prep, housing guides, or other tips for navigating grad school life. If you’re looking for resources not yet listed on this site, please check out this page or reach out to the team.
Whether you are a prospective, incoming, or current graduate student, we encourage you to reach out! We’re here to talk about the culture, logistics, and anything else that can help you get settled in Bloomington, start research or teaching, and work toward graduating with a clear plan.
If you’d like to engage as a...
Peer Mentor: Someone in at least their 3rd year, who has made progress towards Tiers 2/3, and is willing to talk with one or several incoming students, potentially of a similar demographic (ethnic/nationality/math interest/gender/etc/etc). Maybe as simple as getting coffee with a new admit. You don’t need to have everything figured out, organizers can help you. More generally, part of this is creating grad student-grad student networks where people have someone older to at least ask for help directing them to another person. This doesn’t have to be a lot of work.
Organizer: Anybody who’s interested in chipping in, in whatever capacity they can. They could take a lead on getting lunch funds from the department. Or, organize a social event, job panel [something we’ve previously done], or intro-to-teaching workshop. Maybe something about maintaining our website/listserv. You get the vibe, very open ended.
A very IU Math Thanksgiving
Various social events
A series of career panels for getting post-docs, liberal arts jobs, or industry careers/internships.
We are planning more career and social events come the fall, so please get involved!!!!
