Following a period of cultural instability during summer of 2020, conversations of diversity, equity and inclusion were brought to the forefront of academia. The graduate student response at IU was twofold: first, to demand our department to make systematic changes regarding their history of inequity towards marginalized groups. Second, in recognizing administrations cannot act in certain capacities, we formed a Peer Mentoring Initiative, where more experienced graduate students can help get new students comfortable in the department.
Here are our current mentors of the academic year 2026-27 — and a big thank-you for their guidance and support!

As graduate students eventually move on from the program, the Peer Mentoring Initiative is always in need of new mentors to continue its mission of supporting incoming students. If you are interested in getting involved, we warmly encourage you to visit Contact Us or reach out to us at mathpmi@iu.edu. Your participation can make a real difference for new graduate students as they adjust to life in the department.
Here are our previous mentors — and a big thank‑you to each of them!
