Dan Finkel:

  • Title: Teaching Mathematics to Change Lives

Description: Mathematics is one of the most misunderstood subjects. Rather than limiting our scope with students to learning rules and memorizing facts, I argue that we can expand our teaching to invite students into a deep, rigorous, playful, and fundamentally life-altering experience. I've found that teaching with this approach has been one of the most enriching parts of my life. I hope to convince you that it's a project worth embracing.

  • Title: Rich Tasks and Transformative Math Experiences

Description: Beautiful mathematical experiences can change a student’s life: once students see mathematics as a subject involving autonomy, creativity, and power, they (and you!) will never want to go back. How do we make these experiences accessible to students? What does it take to make deep mathematical thinking a regular part of your classroom? In this workshop, we’ll explore how rich tasks can create opportunities for authentic mathematical adventure; we’ll even try some ourselves!

  • Title: Math Circles Samples Part I

Description: In this session, we will take a stroll through some of the most influential and interesting problems throughout history. We will also see if we

can solve some of them on our own! Next we will enjoy some magic! Mind reading, X-ray vision, card tricks and more! We will explain the math behind

these tricks. Finally, we will experience four different brain teasers on shapes and patterns to tease our brains and have a good laugh too!

  • Title: Math Circles Samples Part II

Description: In this session, we will start with solving many problems involving papers. Next, we will learn how we can inspire our students to magically

learn mathematics using playing cards tricks. We end the session by a “escape room” themed activity from the famous branch of mathematics;

cryptography.
