MiraCosta College | MATH 106 | M&W 1:30pm - 3:45pm | OC7004 | Course Number 3100 | 8/21/23 - 12/16/23
In this math class, new topics typically build on previous material. For that reason, I ask that you keep current with the class assignments. The best learning experience is one in which you keep pace with the posted due dates to aid with deeper understanding. Additionally, engaging in the practice opportunities and reading in a timely manner will provide you with sufficient time to seek help in topics you may struggle with by attending to my office hours or reaching out to your squad. Keep in mind that while you learn you will struggle, perhaps even make mistakes and that is ok! Don't let that keep you from trying, on the contrary think of it as a growth opportunity!
I am asked every semester if students can turn in late assignments. I understand that life happens and there are times when turning in an assignment by the due date is just not going to happen. This puts both of us in a peculiar situation! I want to be able to help out but I can’t always do so. When students ask about late assignments, I have to take into account how the assignment impacts the flow of the class and the goals for what you take away from this class. With both of these in mind the following policy seems to work best:
Discussion boards: it is not in the best interest of the class to accept late discussion board postings or replies. To keep the conversations going, students are expected to post their answers and replies by specified dates. It throws off the rhythm of the class if students post answers or replies after the due dates and cause confusion for the rest of the class. With this in mind, I ask that students prioritize discussion board questions as I will not accept late postings or replies.
Canvas Assignments: Late homework assignments will be accepted with a small penalty, as long as it is still before the corresponding exam window.
Exams: The exam dates are posted on the schedule. If you are unable to take an exam on the given date, please let me know ahead of time and we can try to arrange for you to take it early. If you miss a test for any reason, please contact me immediately.
I love hearing from my students! Please use the Canvas inbox to email me. You will hear from me within 24 hours, usually much sooner. There is nothing too trivial to email me about, and I will never feel "bugged" by too many emails from you. No question or concern is too small, and there's no such thing as a "stupid question." Please be aware that I may not check email on weekends or evenings, but that I pride myself on prompt responses.
It is critical that you check your email and course announcements at least every other day while taking this class, and it is your responsibility to make sure the email address on SURF and Canvas is correct. All course announcements are sent through Canvas, so make sure that you have your notifications set up correctly.
The semester goes quickly and life happens! For that reason, it's really important to log in multiple times per week and keep up with the material. It helps to do a little every day if possible. Don't leave assignments until the last minute! Please communicate with me if you know you will be absent from class, and let's work together to ensure that you can stay on track.
Please attend office hours, if you have additional questions.
Attendance is essential to your success in this course. If you do attend the first day of class, I am required to drop you from the course as a “No Show”; this also gives other students the ability to join the class from the waitlist. Please make sure you complete the assignment readings and assignments as early as your schedule allows every week. In the event you miss three or more class meetings prior to the drop or withdrawal dates, that is considered excessive absences, and I may need to drop you from the course. Missing an exam may also result in being dropped from the course. If you arrive late, please enter the room quietly. If you know that you will be arriving late or need to leave early, please let me know. By communicating with me early and often, I can make sure you have all the resources you need to complete this course.
If you choose to drop the course, you can do this through SURF. If you do not complete this by the deadlines listed in the catalog, you will receive a failing grade. Before dropping the class, please see your counselor!
MiraCosta College requires reporting of ALL instances of academic dishonesty as Academic Integrity Violations. These include:
copying another student’s homework and submitting it as your own
bringing in and using notes or supplemental materials when none are allowed
submitting work or information from an internet source as your own material (without noting it as a reference/resource)
allowing another student to copy your work and submit it. To avoid this, don’t give your work to someone else. Working together means sharing ideas and discussing concepts, and is acceptable; each student must independently write their own solutions and responses.
Often referred to as "netiquette," here is a gentle reminder of the interaction practices and rules we'll follow in all our interactions in this course.
If you ever feel that someone is not following these rules, please send an email to me using the Canvas Inbox and describe your concerns.
