This course is designed to build your confidence and competence in mathematics. Come ready to learn, grow, and succeed!
You can expect to spend a minimum of 9 hours per week in this class. You will be allowed to work ahead if you need to. Also, I plan to open up the course in Canvas a week early so you can take a peek around.
I have made every attempt to ensure this course is accessible for all students. If you encounter any accessibility-related difficulties with required or optional course materials, please contact me as soon as possible so that we can investigate the matter further and provide equally effective alternatives, if needed.
Our class will be completely housed on Canvas. This link will take you to MiraCosta’s Online education page. Here you will have access to the Canvas login page as well as all of the contact information to online student support. Please make sure to take the time right now to make sure you are able to login into Canvas.
A typical week in this course will consist of modules with items due usually on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. You will have reading assignments from the text, videos to watch while filling in the workbook, homework assignments, and also some Canvas assignments.
I will be constantly be in touch via Canvas announcements and Pronto. Feedback will be given on assignments as annotations, rubrics, or in the assignment comments.
There are a total of three exams that need to be scheduled through the APC (Academic Proctoring Center). Please schedule them all as early as possible. If you need to reschedule, you can call the APC. The spots will fill up quickly, so please be mindful. Make sure to read through all of the APC exam information section for students. You will need to have your ID with you when you take the exam and I believe they will provide a graphing calculator for you.
If you do not live near campus there are alternative testing facilities available. You will need to contact APC for more information.
If you cannot take an exam during one of these windows, please make arrangements with me to take your exam early.
To maximize your success in Math 102, I recommend following these proven strategies:
Complete all written and online homework by posted due dates: Stay current with each lesson's assignments to build strong mathematical foundations
Prepare for a consistent schedule: Assignments are due three times a week throughout the semester
Keep pace with posted due dates: Staying current aids deeper understanding and prevents overwhelming catch-up work
Read the textbook actively: Work through examples and practice problems as you read to reinforce key concepts
Engage with practice opportunities in a timely manner: Regular practice helps mathematical concepts build naturally
Watch all instructional videos completely: Take notes and pause to work through examples yourself
Create a dedicated study space: Establish a quiet, organized area for completing math work without distractions
Form study connections: Connect with classmates to discuss challenging concepts and support each other's learning
Use Pronto for communication: Connect with classmates and get quick answers to questions
Attend office hours: Take advantage of my availability (Mondays & Wednesdays 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM)
Reach out for help early: Contact your classmates and me whenever you need support or clarification - don't wait until you're behind
Practice math terminology consistently: Use index cards or other methods to master the vocabulary that builds statistical literacy
Remember: Success in an online math course requires self-discipline and consistent engagement. Since you won't see me in person regularly, it's especially important to stay connected through Pronto, actively participate in discussions, and reach out for help when needed. These strategies will help you build the mathematical confidence and skills needed for statistics and beyond.
