Math manipulatives can support student understanding, but their use should be intentional and manageable. Throughout this module, you applied the Prepare → Manage → Plan process to think through what needs to happen before and during instruction.
PREPARE: Get the materials ready.
Determine what students actually need, how the materials should be organized, and what can be prepared before instruction.
MANAGE: Create a simple system.
Decide how manipulatives will be distributed, what expectations students will follow while using them, and how materials will be collected.
PLAN: Use them with purpose.
Connect the manipulative to the instructional objective, determine when students will use it, and identify what students should gain from the experience.
The goal is not to use manipulatives in every lesson. The goal is to recognize when they can support student understanding and have a plan that makes their use purposeful and manageable.
As you plan future math lessons, use Prepare → Manage → Plan as a quick process for deciding how manipulatives can be incorporated effectively.
What is one change you can make to how you currently prepare, manage, or plan for manipulatives that you can apply in your classroom?
