Preparing manipulatives before the lesson is only part of the process. Teachers also need a simple system for how materials will move into, through, and out of the lesson. Without clear procedures, instructional time can quickly be lost to passing out materials, redirecting students, or collecting and reorganizing materials.
The goal is not to create completely new classroom procedures. Instead, think about the systems you already use and how they can be applied specifically to manipulatives.
Lesson: Students will work in groups of four using base-ten blocks to model decimals.
Distribute: One materials manager from each group picks up a prepared container.
Use: Students leave the materials in the container until directed to begin. When the teacher needs everyone's attention, students place the manipulatives on the table and stop touching them.
Collect: The materials manager checks that all pieces are returned to the container and returns it to the designated location.
Match each classroom procedure to the part of the management system it supports: Distribute, Use, or Collect.
