Your mask is suitable for relatively short periods of time, while inside a shop for instance. The mask does give you protection but perhaps more importantly it protects others if you are carrying the virus but do not have symptoms.
The mask should be washed before being used for the first time and after each use. It can be washed by hand or in a washing machine.
The mask can be held in place in a number of ways, over the ears, around the back of the head or attached to a head band. Where possible we supply a length of elastic which you can make ties from – either two separate loops for the ears or a single one around the back of the head. Lengths of ribbon or shoe laces can also be effective. With some masks you will find a length of ribbon in the pack. Different methods for making ties
The mask can be used quite effectively as it is, but there are ways to improve the level of filtration.
The mask has a pocket for an additional filter. The optional filter can be as simple as pieces of kitchen towel (they should be thrown away after each use). For greater protection cut-out sections of vacuum cleaner bags or other filter materials can be used. If HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) certified, these have the same level of filtration as an N95 medical mask. Download the filter template
A wire nose piece can help pinch the fabric closer to the nose. It can be made from pipe cleaner, a small length of wire (bent round at the ends for safety) or the strips found on re-sealable coffee packets and the like. You may need to tape it in place. A pair of eye protectors or glasses can also improve the seal around the nose.
Double sided dress tape can applied to the top and bottom of the mask each time it is used to make a better seal around the face.
Don't forget to take out the filter and nose piece and remove double-sided tape before washing.
