MAS Sensory Garden
Gold Award Project by Shannon Gallaher
My Garden
This garden is a sensory garden used for Mamaroneck Avenue School and its community. The garden is intended to be used for the Special Classes Program at MAS as a safe environment to make learning, and school life in general, a more comfortable space for students. Placed in the existing MAS garden, this will be a small but constructive place for students to use throughout the school day to center their mind and body through sensory awareness in order to soothe the stress that comes with school. In paying attention to one's senses, you are able to focus and remove mind clutter so that you can be more alert and conscious throughout the day. The garden has at least one plant to appeal to each of the five human senses. In being surrounded by nature and plants that appeal to your senses, it is proven that it can reduce fear, anger, and stress and even increase mental productivity. Physically it can lower blood pressure, heart rate, muscle tension, and the production of stress hormones. In adding this to a school environment, it ensures a feeling of safety and comfortability which, in turn may increase retentiveness and enjoyable interactions amongst the students.
