The world of percussion doesn’t cross with the world of knitting often, but now, it does! This pattern includes everything for an accurate snare drum from a detailed shell to the snares themselves.
Enjoy!
Materials:
Gauge isn’t important for this pattern, but I used worsted weight yarn and size 6 needles.
Colors:
Black, blue, red, or any color you’d like to make the shell.
Light gray
White or off-white
Tan
Shell:
CO 24, join in round
Round 1: Purl
Round 2-6: Knit chart using fair isle (K1 round in main color, K3 rounds as CC MC, and K1 round in MC). On round three, you can add an optional extra stitch next to one of the gray stitches, this is the snare switch.
Round 7: Knit
BO
Drum Heads (make 2):
CO 24
Row 1: *K2tog K2* around
Row 2: Purl
Row 3: *K2tog K1* around
Row 4: Purl
Row 5: *K2tog* around
Break yarn, leaving a long tail, thread the tail through the needle and thread through the remaining 6 stitches. Pull tight and work a mattress stitch up the sides to make a circle.
Snares (make 2):
Take the light gray yarn, take two halves of the yarn and pull apart. Crochet chain 8 stitches. Repeat with the other half of the yarn.
Drum Sticks (make 2):
CO 2 light brown yarn onto size 1 needles
Knit in I-Cord for 5 rows
K2tog, cut tail, pull through last stitch.
Weave in ends
Assembly:
Sew the first drum head to an edge of the shell. Stuff the drum and sew the other head on. Tie both ends of the snares together and attach to the drum head you like less on opposite edges of the head.
