Step 1: Finding the right pair
You’ll want to use sticks you don’t use frequently, because knitting can sometimes scratch needles and it will do the same to sticks. Also, some yarns can dye the needles if the color is too rich. The beads of the sticks shouldn’t stick out too much from the stick, make sure the yarn will slide off the drumsticks easily. Finally, make sure the sticks don’t have many splinters or cowbell marks, because this could ruin the yarn.
Step 2: Measuring
This step will tell you what knitting needle size your drumsticks are. Measure the circumference of the thickest part of the drumsticks in centimeters. Multiply this number by 10 for the measurement in millimeters. Divide the number by pi or 3.14, but pi will work better.
Step 3: Knitting
Find the needle size closest to the measurement. It shouldn’t matter too much if it’s a bit off, but feel free to adjust the number of stitches that you cast on.
Step 4: Showing it off
When I started knitting with my drumsticks, I texted my band friends, who thought it was a great idea. So, when you’re showing off your favorite new project, tell people how you made it! Celebrate mixing your hobbies. Just because you can play paradiddles and ratamacues doesn’t mean you can’t knit and purl to your heart’s content.
Enjoy!
