The Sekolah Quantum Inti Indonesia’s Special Curriculum focuses on four aspects which are character building and living values, literacy, leadership and entrepreneurship, and art, sport, and physical development. As an English major pre-service teacher under the SEA-Teacher Project, the general objective that is expected from me was to enhance students’ proficiency in English literacy.
My teaching plan consists of two weekly sessions because it is a continuation of my cooperating teacher, Ms. Vivi's, English class. Each session focuses on different aspects of descriptive writing. The primary goal was to enable students to write descriptive texts accurately.
For the students to know how to formulate descriptive texts on their own, it is essential to give prior knowledge about the various aspects that compose a descriptive text. The learning objectives established were as follows:
1)Students are able to identify the specific details in descriptive text.
2)Students are able to distinguish adverbs and adjectives.
3)Students are able to construct descriptive sentences in specific details using adverbs and adjectives.
4)Students are able to identify the language features used in the descriptive text by analyzing the given sample descriptive texts.
5)Students are able to construct their own descriptive text appropriately.
The abovementioned objectives were specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time-bound. This was checked and approved by Miss Vivi, my cooperating teacher in Grade 10, and Miss Eva, the Senior High School principal. The teaching plan went through thorough discussion to ensure the alignment of the lesson objective and that the means will meet the end goal.
It was then implemented as scheduled. The first session was dedicated to discussing specific texts in descriptive text and the second meeting was language features in descriptive texts. In-class writing exercises, group activities, individual worksheets, class discussions, and ice-breaking games were used to reinforce learning. Along with the actual implementation, among the encountered problems were the time management and the choice of English words used. In order to cope with this, I modified some parts of the lesson plan such as making the worksheets as students' assignments.
Moreover, I considered the diversity and multiple intelligences of students. Thus, I used different kinds of teaching methods such as traditional lectures for auditory learners, multimedia presentations for visual learners, and hands-on group activities for kinesthetic learners. The combination of these three methods also catered to the other types of students’ learning styles and preferences so that the objectives would be met.
The assessment and evaluation methods employed during each session include the actual group presentation and individual worksheets which were specifically designed to measure students’ learning progress and the effectiveness of the teaching strategies. All these were also utilized to ensure that students have truly acquired the ability to write descriptive texts on their own with accuracy.
The results of students' performances showed progress in their descriptive writing skills. Student outcomes indicated significant progress in descriptive text writing skills. In the first session, their worksheets and assignments demonstrated good use of sensory language but some contained basic grammatical errors like the use of capital letters at the beginning of a sentence and period at the end. Nevertheless, the students' outcomes in the second session showed improved and effective organization of descriptive texts.
Based on my evaluation and reflection on my teaching practice, it is recommended to:
1)Implement learning activities that suit the time allotment for the lesson so that learners will be given ample time to do their work.
2)Integrate more interesting activities that will promote consistent engagement from students .
3)Incorporate learning media resources like videos, pictures, and online or printed materials that meet the students' diverse learning styles.
Generally, the teaching plan was implemented successfully and the learning objectives were met. Through the quantum teaching approach, students were able to have fun and maintain consistent engagement in the class. Personally, the thing that I must work on as a teacher is the pace of content delivery and the entire activities being implemented in the classroom. The lesson plan must serve as my guide but I must also foresee the unexpected things which may affect the flow of the classroom setup that I expect.
