For this project, we utilized Google's News Search to evaluate two recent credible reports on cybersecurity issues. Like the ones below, we also completed a training module on cybersecurity to be certified.
This ABC News article was written by Michael Finney and Renee Koury on November 1, 2022, it informs the audience of working Herman Ng, believed his identity was compromised. He was notified by the Employment Development Department (EDD) that he claimed his disability benefits. He relentlessly tried to dispute with the agency to terminate the suspicious activities but was met with no avail. All it took was his doctor not being verified for them to suspend his account, soon after Herman received an EDD debit card. Frustrated, he contacted his bank only to find out that they have two addresses on file outside of California in Oregon and Iowa. Desperate, he reached ABC News to air out his displeasure which ended up grabbing the attention of EDD to resolve the issue of his SSN and name being associated with frauds.
Trend Micro wrote a blog on November 4, 2022, to address the audience regarding the recent change in ownership and the monetization of verification checks. The transition is a perfect opportunity for scammers to utilize the insecurity surrounding verification checks. The example provided is a fraud email sent out to dupe and enticed people to register for free. Trend Micro analyzed the imperfections in the email noting it was from a Gmail address, not Twitter. Along with comparing the provided login link to the authentic one, they added the use of trustworthy sources to keep updated, contact Twitter Support, and offered their free app, Trend Micro Check to detect scams.
Lessons Learned
By the end, I became aware that cybersecurity threats come in all shapes and sizes. With that in mind, I know what to look out for, so I don't surrender my personal information.
