We have increased police officers on the streets. Through careful planning, we were able to provide new space for our Winkler Police Service to work out of efficiently and safely. Our officers continue to increase and diversify their training in order to better serve us.
I am very proud of the new building that allows firefighters to train in all kinds of weather and for many different scenarios. Winkler and Stanley have a long term agreement providing Fire and Rescue services to the citizens of Stanley. This is an example of two councils and communities working together for the benefit of both communities.
Securing water for Winkler has been a quest for many previous councils. The new water treatment plant means that we have a very secure source of drinking water. Partnering with the Federal and Provincial governments allowed us to make this an affordable project. We are currently planning a further expansion of wastewater treatment facilities to service our growing community.
I am proud to be involved in continuing to improve the City of Winkler website. It is a great source of information, including maps, council meeting minutes, information of interest to businesses, information for both our citizens and visitors, and lots of links to other sites that viewers of our website might be interested in.
A highlight of my time on City Council includes the completion of the P.W. Enns Centennial Concert Hall. It is important for council to have a vision to for quality of life including culture and recreation.
In my most recent term on City Council we were able to complete the Meridian Exhibition Centre expansion. This major project, fully funded by the City of Winkler, provides a variety of year-round recreation activities and promotes healthy living for athletes and citizens of all ages. The expanded space also allows Winkler to attract larger tournaments and conventions bringing tourism dollars into the local economy.
I was excited to be part of the planning and construction of the Winkler Library. Since its doors opened, the library has enjoyed a continuous increase in readership.
The Pine Ridge skate park is a great addition for our active youth as a result of working together with the developers of Pine Ridge Estates, volunteers from the community, and the City of Winkler.
Seniors have helped build our city into what it is today, and deserve the honour of affordable, comfortable housing and healthcare in the city they helped build. I have actively supported councils past and present, in developing facilities including the Dr. C.W.Wiebe Medical Centre, Cedar Estates, and the Buhler Active Living Centre.
