PRINCIPLE 5: "Effective online teachers recognize ongoing professional development is a central component of their success."
In April of 2018, Merced College was accepted into the CVC-OEI Course Design Academy. I was pleased to be the first instructor from my college to submit a course to the Online Course Exchange and have it approved. Since then, I have advised and encouraged other Merced College instructors to submit their course designs to the Exchange.
I am a member of our local Peer Online Course Review (POCR) team. I completed three related @ONE courses. The local POCR team is instrumental in preparing Merced College instructors to develop and submit course designs for the Exchange.
I completed the Certified Master Online Instructor Training (CMOIT) course at Merced College. Here is a team project to which I contributed. Please note how four instructors from widely varied disciplines successfully apply an innovative strategy to improve learning experiences for their students.
I developed a remedial strategy, using Canvas Mastery Paths and EdPuzzle, to promote equity and give lower-performing students a "second chance". I am in the process of sharing the strategy with colleagues state-wide; for example:
I recently completed all requirements for the @ONE Certificate in Online Course Design Fundamentals.
My professional development has led me into local leadership and mentorship roles relating to online course development at Merced College. I believe it came as a surprise to many that someone from the lowly and ignored Child Development department was the first at our institution to submit a course to the Exchange and have it approved. My venture into online course design has rejuvenated my teaching career. I am enjoying new opportunities and having fun. And, <<¿quién sabe?>>, maybe I'll eventually be offered a full-time job and earn a living wage, <<si Dios quiere>>!
