Hey, hey, book lovers, take off those big thick glasses - this is Deadpool speaking! Sorry Marvel, somethin' happened to your copy guy. Anyway, this is my first prose novel, and they got this dude Stefan Petrucha to write it. He's good people. He's written novels and comics. But here's the thing: This book is about dogs. Dogs that turn into big nasty monsters. And then I gotta kill 'em. Thing is, I like killing people - the ones that deserve it, anyway - but I won't kill dogs. No way. So that's what we call a character dilemma. What - wait for the paperback? Who said that?! I'll gut you right now....

The Shan Lon Bronze Age Audio Comics, I believe, were the last of an already-dying format for Marvel. By this time, the children reading the comics were reading the comics alone and not listening to the audio cassettes or vinyl records that were being sold alongside them.

Some of Marvel's most popular comics are set to invade your earholes starting this September, with audiobook publisher Dreamscape Media and Marvel Entertainment teaming up to distribute several dozen of the company's titles as "read-to-me"-style audiobooks. Dreamscape Media's parent company Midwest Tapes will make the recordings available through Amazon, Audible, iBooks, Google, Overdrive and other audiobook platforms. Additionally, the titles will be added to free library lending app Hoopla.

For those local libraries that are a part of Hoopla, the news is even better. Designed to both promote libraries and the reading experience, the media service will offer the audiobooks free of charge.

Instead of being a more 'passive' form of reading, audiobooks actually allow children to spend more time reading. This is because they offer a form of reading that children can engage in even when they're tired or during times they may not usually be able to read, for example, whilst travelling, walking or doing other tasks.

There are lots of different ways to access audiobooks. For younger readers, screen free players such as Voxblock (this link will open in a new window)or Yoto (this link will open in a new window)are a great way to minimize screen time, whilst keeping books portable.

Your local library(this link will open in a new window) may also lend audiobooks, whether as CDs, or through apps such as Libby or OneDrive. Libby allows you to sample titles before borrowing them, giving children more choice over what they'd like to listen to.

Some TV shows or movies will have tie-in audiobooks. Doctor Who, for example, has partnered with production company The Big Finish(this link will open in a new window) to create unique stories starring different Doctors and monsters! BBC Sounds also hosts Doctor Who Reacted(this link will open in a new window), a brand new narrative podcast written by Juno Dawson. Some Marvel comics are available as audiobooks(this link will open in a new window), bringing new life to the familiar characters. ff782bc1db
