Beginning Band (Y)—Emphasis is on the acquisition of basic musical skills as students learn to play a brass or woodwind instrument. Band classes prepare several concert compositions that are performed for an audience. Students should anticipate participation in after-school practices and evening performances. No audition is required and all grade levels are accepted for this ensemble.

Magnet Concert Band (Y)—For students with one or more years of band experience. Students will expand their knowledge on the fundamentals of their instrument, as well as to perform as a band using elements of music such as style, dynamics, tempo, timbre, balance, blend, and articulation. Those in this ensemble learn to work together as a collaborative ensemble to achieve both individual and group success. Students should anticipate participation in after-school practices and evening performances. (Advanced 6th grade students require recommendation by the band director and/or audition).

Magnet Symphonic Band (Y) - Available for experienced 7th - 8th grade band students. (Audition and/or band director recommendation required.) Technical drills, scale studies, rhythm studies, and sight reading exercises are used to advance the student’s skills, knowledge, and reading ability in music. A wide variety of band literature is studied to give the students experience in various musical styles. This ensemble participates in state level MPA festivals and goes on the spring band field trip. Students should anticipate participation in after-school practices, honor bands, and evening performances.

Magnet Jazz Band (Y) - An ensemble providing students an opportunity to learn and perform music from four different styles in a big band setting—swing, rock, ballad, and Latin/Afro Cuban. Students will also explore beginning concepts of jazz improvisations, knowledge of chords and jazz history. Participation in all scheduled rehearsals and performances is required. (Audition and/or band director recommendation required.) *Prerequisite: To be enrolled in Jazz Band, students must also have been placed into and registered for Symphonic Band, Advanced Orchestra, or Director Recommendation.

Magnet Percussion Ensemble (Y) - This class combines both Concert Band and Symphonic Band percussionist in to one class. Emphasis is placed on the study of fundamental and advanced percussion techniques. Students will perform a wide variety of percussion repertoire from Classical to World Music. Students should anticipate participation in after-school practices, honor bands, and evening performances.
