My publications cover three main research areas: career management, human resource management and technology, and organizational resilience. Research on career management is largely developed in collaboration with colleagues from the 5C network (Cross-Cultural Collaboration on Contemporary Careers). Regarding human resource management and the impact of new technologies on work, I co-authored with Giovanni Costa a widely adopted handbook (data updated to March 2022), used in 66 courses across 26 Italian universities and reaching a potential audience of more than five thousand students. My publications on organizational resilience focus primarily on organizational and behavioral aspects, drawing on several research projects carried out over the years.

Career resilience is critical to the world's aging workforce, aiding older workers in adapting to the ever-evolving nature of work. While ageist stereotypes often depict older workers as less resilient when faced with workplace changes, existing research studies offer conflicting evidence on whether older age hinders or improves career resilience. In response to this conflicting evidence, the present study employs multi-level data from 6772 employees in 28 countries to examine the age-career resilience relationships and underlying mechanisms, hence advancing our understanding of career resilience across the life course. By integrating macro-contextual factors such as the unemployment rate and the culture of education with individual-level mechanisms such as positive career meaning and career optimism, we provide a comprehensive model explaining how career resilience varies across age groups. Grounded in life course theory, our findings resolve prior inconsistencies in resilience research, contribute to bridging the micro-macro gap in HRM literature, and challenge existing age-based stereotypes.

Employing a multiple case study analysis, this paper explores the contextual factors—internal, external, and relational—that affect small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in designing their approaches to talent management (TM). Results underscore the significance of two prominent internal variables—namely, organizational size and ownership structure—alongside an external determinant represented by the industry/sector within which the company operates. The study also revealed that the economic and social context in which the company is situated is not only a geographical characteristic (thus constituting an external factor) but also furnishes valuable relational resources subsequently influencing the approaches to TM. Additionally, we found that while industry/sector simply dictates competency needs (hard or soft), the size of the company (affecting TM resource availability) combined with the ownership structure (affecting TM scope and level of formalization) generates specificities in TM practices. Relational factors—namely “local embeddedness”—appear to assume a pervasive role.

Despite previous studies acknowledging that resilience operates at multiple levels (the individual, group, and organizational levels), there is a lack of research exploring how resilience works across levels. In this paper we explore how the individual resilience of entrepreneurs and organizational resilience affect the resilient response of their SMEs. Our hypotheses are tested through structural equation modeling using a sample of 517 Italian firms. The results show a positive relationship between the individual resilience of entrepreneurs and the resilient response of SMEs and show that organizational resilience mediates this relationship. The paper makes theoretical contributions to the literature on resilience management and practical contributions for entrepreneurs and policymakers.

Firms’ strategies and business model themes (BMTs) entail choices that create a configuration of interdependent elements that ultimately affect a firm’s performance. So far, extant studies on BMTs (i.e. novelty, efficiency, complementarity and lock-in) have neglected an explorative analysis of how configurations of BMTs and the choices of a firm’s strategy (namely, the source of the competitive advantage and the market scope) are associated with a firm’s performance in small and medium enterprises (SMEs). We address this limitation by analysing a sample of 96 small firms using a configurational approach. We identified four equifinal configurations leading to high performance and five equifinal configurations associated with low performance. Overall, our results suggest that in small firms, it is essential to combine a differentiation strategy with either consistent pairs of BMTs or the search for new avenues of value creation and capture, while featuring too many BMTs might be detrimental to their growth. Our study contributes to the scholarly debate about the relationship between business models and strategy.
