Microbial Metalloenzymes in Marine Biogeochemical Cycles
Marine phytoplankton, plantlike microorganisms that drift within the world’s oceans, are essential for sustaining life on earth. In the Marine Metalloprotein Lab at GEOMAR, we investigate how phytoplankton use metal-containing proteins (metalloenzymes) to acquire their nutrients, sustain their metabolism, support oceanic primary productivity, and perpetuate biogeochemical cycles. For this purpose, we apply tools ranging from biochemistry (protein expression, activity assays), microbiology (cell cultures, molecular cloning), proteomics (quantitative, environmetal, metalloproteomics) to oceanography (nutrient speciation, field incubations).
