Framework

The EEA is in the forefront in water-bodies protection and the Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC), implemented in Italy by the TUA, establishes the necessity of protecting and improving the conditions of water bodies. Their deeper knowledge is fundamental for planning a sustainable use of water resources. In this context the anthropogenic pressure and the rapid deglaciation of European Alps has put the unique characteristics of glacial lakes in the spotlight of scientific interest. However, direct measurements are not easy. Researchers may dive in unknown chilled waters with unpredictable risks. Otherwise they need to transport heavy and bulky equipment in remote areas that can be reached only by walking or by helicopter. Walking on trails is low-polluting but requires light and ergonomic equipment that does not exist and helicopters have high costs and pollute. This means scientists need a suitable solution.
