Markden ("we", "our", or "the app") is developed by Aneesh Pradeep. This Privacy Policy explains how Markden handles your information.Å The short version is: we do not collect, store, or share any of your personal data.

Markden is designed as a privacy-first application. The app operates entirely on your device with no server-side components, no user accounts, and no data collection of any kind.

--- INFORMATION WE DO NOT COLLECT ---

Markden does not collect, transmit, or store any of the following:

- Personal information (name, email, phone number, address)

- Device identifiers or advertising IDs

- Usage analytics or behavioral data

- Crash reports or diagnostics

- Location data

- Browsing or search history

- Contacts, photos, or other device data

- IP addresses or network information

We do not use any third-party analytics services, advertising frameworks, or tracking SDKs.

--- DATA STORED ON YOUR DEVICE ---

All data created and used by Markden is stored locally on your device within the app sandbox. This includes:

- Documents, notes, and files you create

- Todo tasks and daily journal entries

- App settings and preferences (stored in UserDefaults)

- Version history snapshots of your files

- Your Anthropic API key (stored in the iOS Keychain)

- Your file encryption master password (stored in the iOS Keychain)

This data is never transmitted to any server operated by us. This data is not accessible to other apps on your device. When you delete the app, all of this data is permanently removed from your device.

--- THIRD-PARTY AI SERVICE ---

Markden offers optional AI writing features powered by Anthropic Claude. These features require you to provide your own Anthropic API key (Bring Your Own Key model).

When you use AI features, the following data is sent directly from your device to Anthropic (api.anthropic.com) over an encrypted HTTPS connection:

- The text content of messages you type in the AI Chat

- Document text you select for AI quick actions (such as grammar fixing, rewriting, or summarizing)

- Your API key for authentication with Anthropic

This data is sent directly from your device to Anthropic. It does not pass through any servers operated by us. We do not have access to your API key or to any data you send to Anthropic.

AI features are entirely optional. If you do not enter an API key, no data is ever sent to any external service. The app functions fully without AI features.

--- FILE ENCRYPTION ---

Markden offers optional AES-256-GCM file encryption. Your master password is stored in the iOS Keychain using hardware-backed encryption provided by Apple. The master password never leaves your device and is never transmitted to any server.

--- CHILDREN'S PRIVACY ---

Markden does not knowingly collect any personal information from children under the age of 13. Since the app does not collect any personal information from any user, it complies with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and similar regulations.

--- DATA SHARING ---

We do not sell, trade, rent, or otherwise share any user data with third parties. Since we do not collect any user data, there is no data to share.

--- DATA SECURITY ---

All data remains on your device within the iOS app sandbox, which is protected by Apple's operating system security. Sensitive credentials (API keys and encryption passwords) are stored in the iOS Keychain, which uses hardware-level encryption.

--- YOUR RIGHTS ---

Since Markden does not collect or store any personal data on external servers, there is no personal data for us to provide, modify, or delete. All your data is on your device and under your full control. You can delete all app data at any time by deleting the app from your device.

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be reflected on this page with an updated revision date. Your continued use of the app after any changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
